Intranets :: 17:12

Filed under: Codified life, English

I’ve been working on an Intranet-application for one scientific community, working on it a lot as this has required rather a bunch more of research on PHP than I expected. PHP is a nice language, nice is a good description for a language whose acronym stands for personal homepage tools. Its wieldly and in many ways inventive one, but boy does it present issues every once in a while.

I taught myself sessions during this project and today I almost cracked my head doing content-types, so that the files that are meant just for the intranet users would remain that way. Solution is not the stronges imaginable, but it aint bad. The system also workd quite neatly.

Now I think that soon I can with honesty tell that I really know this technique. Sessions and databases are routine down from the mill kind of thing for any PHP-application, thank god I got my head around them. I also have some ideas how to do them better (Stronger security) if I really need to. Progressing in bounds and leaps.

Problem with this is the time. I took this project when it seemed that I was going to be unemployed for the summer, I wasn’t and now I’m employed in the new place. I’m seriously lacking the time to invest in this project, I took a day for it today and thankfully got the basic functionality finished as well as the critical feature done. Three more features and a minor fix to earlier one, and that should be it. Just cash it in. But it feels unpleasant having this thing hanging, without having the time to get it done in. I’ll probably have to take time from studying to do it.

At work I have yet an other new technique to learn, I feel greatfull that it seemed so similar to the stuff that I already know and different in the ways that it will be incrasing my personal level of skill. The workmates still seem rather nice and after the second day in there a bit less intimidating, too… they drank coffee I made and didn’t comment on the attempted poisoning, the chat too. So far the one thing I have to complain about is the IDE that I’m required to use, and that ain’t too bad, me thinks. It could be cubicles, it could be low salary but it’s just the IDE. Quite good for a nerdy life.
