SCA-meme, quick take :: 16:14

Filed under: SCA-life, Near Orbit, English

Looky looky what was on the net. Picked this one straight out from the meme-creator’s journal

1. What is your SCA name? (You don’t have to write the full name, just your first name if you want.)

Dubhghall MacÉibhearáird

2. What is your home kingdom?

Drachenwald

3. Have you ever lived in another kingdom? If so, where?

Nope, and barring a major move never will

4. Do you remember your first SCA event? When/what was it?

Fall 1995, I’ve forgotten the name but it was held in Aarnimetsä at a naval base as Petrus was doing his time as chaplain in there and noted that if he doesn’t organise an event there he won’t get to any for a good while. It was a one night feast for us, the conscripts were of course welcome to it at it was nominally arranged for them and all in all I guess it was one of the nicest little events I’ve been to.

5. Do you have any awards? (You don’t have to list them if you don’t want)

Yes, interested parties can find these at the Drachenwald OoP.

6. Do you list them after your name in communications like e-mail?

Most certainly not. I rarely use even my title in such communications, although when I do I tend to go for “tiarná” instead of the standard lord.

7. Do you have a device?

Argent, a wolf rampant and in chief two pellets sable.

8. Do you use it? On what?

Not nearly enough, or I didn’t use to, but my SCA-sis gave me a silk pouch gorgeously applicated with it (well, not exactly it with my mundane arms: Argent, a wolf rampant between three water lily leafs sable) as a wedding gift and I’m most certainly using that most of the time. Other than that, as usual I have lot of plans on what I could do with it :)

9. Are you on all the kingdom/society lists available to you, or do you avoid them?

I’m on many lists, not all of the kingdom’s but many. I follow a number of society lists in order to get perspective on the wider hobby.

10. Do you keep your Pennsic/Estrella/Gulf Wars/etc. site tokens?

I keep all of my tokens. I hope to get around and set some of them up as jewellery to wear.

11. Do you keep the favours you’ve been given by royalty/friends/SOs, etc.? Do You wear them all?

Any favour I’d get I’d keep. Currently only such is a household favour of the clan that I tend to wear quite often.

12. Do you call your friends by their SCA names even when you’re not at an event?

Quite a lot. ’nuff said.

13. Do you go out to dinner in garb after an event?

Our events here in Aarnimetsä are such that you don’t go to dinner after them. I usually limit garb wearing to sites, though there was one incident when I walked to small town central wondering why the people keep ogling, until remembered that the thing flapping around me is a cape. So no, unless I forget myself.

14. Do you have all kinds of garb, or do you generally stick to one period?

I go for variety,… by interest and happenstance.

15. How many interests do you have within the SCA? What’s your favourite?

Plenty of interests. My main interests in the SCA are general issues and heraldry, but along those I’ve found myself increasingly interested in different crafts over the years and am currently trying out / getting to combat (cut’n thrust)

16. Do you have an SCA-oriented web site (to show off projects, keep dress diaries, etc.)?

No. One time I did a(n unofficial) companion site for the baronial polling, but that’s the closest I’ve been to this kind of things.

17. Do you maintain a hairstyle that is more period style than modern? How about any other part of your appearance?

I thouhgt I did, as I first grew my hair long, found out that I was wrong, for a good while didn’t care and now I’m actually having a nice all purpose hair cut that’s reasonably period.
Other parts of my body are close approximation to period, no piercings (apart ear which is documentable ) and no tattoos.

18. Do you tell “No $###, there I was” stories? (Admit it.) Do any of them involve well-known SCA people?

I admit to telling anecdotes, but am not sure if they qualify as this kind of thing.

19. Authenticity is Fun. Yes or no? Why?

Yes it is. When actually managing something good and authentic the feeling is great.
Trying to get there is fun also, even when falling short.

20. Is there one modern thing at events that really bugs you?

Electric lights when kept on, hate it.
Mundane political talk in event, doesn’t belong there and upsets the balance of things.
These are the top of my list&tm;

Bonus Question! 21. Everyone has a shameful garb/accessory mistake hidden somewhere in their past. What’s yours? (We’re all friends here, we promise not to laugh. Much.)

Erm, when I was really young in the SCA…
I had a tunic made, found beautifull rich red wool for it, got nice clasps and then a bargain for fake fur that I thouhgt’d look reaaal nice as a trim on it. Friend made it for me and I was feeling good going to event, ’twas a wee bit before christmass I think and no shit there I was changed into it, fit my nice big bracelets on and entered the hall and in a mere moment found out what I’d not thought when before. White fur on red tunic deserved me a welcoming singsong about Santa. Boy was I proud of myself… Still it irks me, that I lent the tunic to some newbie who never returned it, with a change of fur it would have been jus’ perfec.
